Definition: Set of points of an optical system from which the main parameters of the system may be defined and, given a subject distance, from which parameters of the image may be deduced. * Comprises the three conjugate pairs of focal, principal and nodal points of a lens . * Also known as cardinal planes, Gauss points or Gauss planes.
