Definition: Instrument installed in a darkened room whose optical parts consist of a small aperture (which may be moved to change view) supplied with a focusing optic for projecting an image onto a screen, usually via a mirror. Observers may be able to walk around the screen to view the image. * Ancestor of the modern camera but without photosensitive material for recording.
