buffer

Definition: (1) Computing: device or component that stores data between source and application usually in order to allow source to carry with other tasks. * E.g. print buffer can be filled rapidly with data which is then relatively slowly printed out. (2) Chemical that maintains pH of solution at constant level while chemical reactions take place within it e.g. preserves alkalinity. * Used in e.g. developers. (3) Fibre optics: a protective material or cover for optical fibre cover.
