brightness resolution

Definition: A measure of how fully a pixel in a digital image represents (digitally) the brightness (which is analogue) of the corresponding point in the original image. * It depends on (a) the bit depth of the coding for the sensor output i.e. how many bits are used to represent the steps of the gray scale (b) the linearity of sensor response (c) noise levels from the electronic circuits (d) levels of optical noise in the form of flare in the light-path.
