brightness

Definition: (1) Quality of visual perception that varies with amount or intensity of light that a given element in visual field or optical component appears to send out or transmit e.g. sunny day, powerful lamp, efficient viewfinder. Antonym: darkness. (2) Brilliance of colour, related to hue or colour saturation e.g. bright pink as opposed to pale pink; also in reference to reproduction of colour e.g. this film produces bright colours; colours on this monitor are bright. (British recommended usage, especially in dye industry.) * Not to be confused with lightness.
