barrel distortion

Definition: Aberration that causes a square to be projected barrel-shaped. * Negative distortion i.e. magnification diminishes with increasing field angle. * In photographic use a distortion of approximately -5% or more is generally regarded as unacceptable for professional-quality work: for copying etc., distortion should be less than 0.1%.
