anti-halation layer
Definition: (1) Light-absorbing coating applied between a photographic emulsion and back support in order to prevent reflection of stray light from the film support material back into the light-sensitive area. * Also known as anti-halation coating. (2) Light-absorbing material -- e.g. black velvet -- laid under a brightly light subject to prevent the formation of a secondary image when examined or photographed.
