anti-aliasing

Definition: Smoothing away the jaggies or stair-steppping in an image or computer typesetting. * In image processing, an algorithm is applied to even out the density difference between the boundary pixels and its neighbours (i.e. filtering); other techniques include pre-filtering at the display resolution, linear intensity analysis. * In printing, e.g. laser-printers, the size of dots is varied so that the smaller dots fill in the 'step' and reduce the appearance of a stair. * The net effect of any regime is intended to give the appearance of increased resolution.
