analogue

Definition: Effect, representation or record that is proportionate to the phenomenon, physical property or change being represented or recorded. * E.g. analogue signals vary proportionally to the physical change they represent e.g. high power is represented by a higher wave form. Analogue records are based on changes proportional to the effect being recorded e.g. higher silver densities represent more light. * Almost all recording devices start off with an analogue response - e.g. an increasing charge represents brighter light - before being converted or measured so that a digital code can be assigned to the response.
