alpha channel

Definition: Unused portion of a file format: in image processing it may be e.g. a spare 8-bit portion of a 32-bit image file. * Such files are designed so that changing the value of the alpha channel can change properties of the other channels e.g. transparency/opacity of some or all of the rest of the file.
