Definition: (1) Device designed to speed up a computer's operations e.g. by providing specialist processors optimised for certain software operations e.g. Photoshop accelerators; also for running large, high-resolution monitor screens or for playing games software. * Usually implemented as a card or board that plugs-in to the motherboard. (2) Component of chemical developer formulation that increases its speed of action by creating alkaline environment for the developing agent to work in e.g borax, sodium sulphite.
