Z-axis
Definition: (1) Line perpendicular to the plane containing the X and Y axes, which is conventionally taken as the plane facing the viewer. * Usually used to measure a third dimension or variable. * But note: (2) In aerial reconnaissance etc., the Z axis is perpendicular to the earth's surface or to the plane of the flight path. * Also known as depth axis.
