Schlieren optics

Definition: System designed to record small variations in refractive index of e.g. air due to changes in density or depth used in e.g. observing air-flow over objects. * The object is illuminated by a very bright light through a very narrow slit (Schlieren projector): this casts a shadow of the object with gradients of light and dark around it, which correspond to variations in the air.
