Kerr effect

Definition: Change in the light propagation properties with electric field. (1) Elelectro-optical effect: a liquid or crystal becomes anisotropic or birefringent when an electric field is applied to it. (2) Magneto-optical effect: polarised light is reflected with different changes to the plane of polarisation according to the magnetic field applied to the reflector.
