HDR

Definition: High Dynamic Range.

  1. Scene with a large luminance range i.e. the difference in brightness between the darkest parts with detail and the brightest parts with detail is considerable. * Typically a sunny day with dark foreground and bright sky.
  2. Image manipulation technique which compresses the luminance range into the mid-tone range of an image. * Various methods available e.g. a bracketing series of over-, normal and under-exposed images are made, then combined so that bright skies in the under-exposed image are combined in the HDR image with the dark shadows of the over-exposed image. * Also called, erroneously, tone-mapping.
