Definition: A fundamental type of line or curve which is defined by a series of control points which influence the line according to certain functions: the position of the control points can be changed and the functions can be varied, thus changing the shape of the curve. * The definition can be applied to two and to three-dimensional space. * B-spline curves can be changed locally, without the whole curve being altered, in contrast to Bézier curves. * Many so-called Bézier curves behave mathematically more like B-spline curves. * Derived from word 'splines', referring to the strips of wood that determine the shape of a boat.
